International Day of Women and Girls in Science

On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Provo Water was proud to welcome Her Excellency Dileeni Daniel-Selvaratnam, together with aspiring young scientists from Long Bay High School and Clement Howell High School, to our Water Quality Department.

The visit formed part of Provo Water’s ongoing commitment to education, transparency, and inspiring the next generation of leaders in science and environmental management across the Turks and Caicos Islands.

During their visit, students toured our laboratory facilities, learned how drinking water is purified and monitored, and took part in hands-on chemical and bacteriological testing. They were able to see first-hand how science supports public health, environmental protection, and the delivery of safe and reliable water to our community.

In 2025 alone, Provo Water’s laboratory team carried out more than 10,000 tests across our distribution network and storage facilities. Our laboratory is also one of only four internationally accredited laboratories in the Caribbean, reflecting our strong commitment to quality, competence, and safety.

Water Quality Manager Sherry Bell Parker shared her passion for encouraging more young women to consider careers in science:

Water quality is about protecting people and communities every single day. Science gives us the tools to do that with confidence and integrity. I hope today shows these students that there is a real and rewarding future for them in this field. We need more women bringing their ideas, leadership, and dedication into science and environmental management.”

International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a global initiative that highlights the vital contributions of women in STEM. It helps close the gender gap and encourages more girls to pursue careers that drive innovation, safeguard public health, and shape sustainable communities.

For Provo Water, this visit was more than a laboratory tour. It was an opportunity to connect with young people, share knowledge, and demonstrate how science plays a central role in everyday life in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

We were inspired by the curiosity, enthusiasm, and confidence shown by the students, and we hope this experience encourages them to dream big, explore boldly, and believe in their ability to make a meaningful difference.

Provo Water remains committed to supporting education, promoting inclusion, and investing in the future of science and water management in our islands.
