Celebrating Women in Science

Sherry Bell Parker’s Dedication to Water Quality

Science is the foundation of progress, innovation, and the pursuit of knowledge. It allows us to understand our world, improve lives, and solve complex challenges. Yet, for centuries, women and girls have faced barriers in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

On International Women and Girls in Science Day (February 11th), we celebrate the dedication, resilience, and achievements of women who continue to break barriers and push the boundaries of discovery.

At Provo Water Company, science is not just a concept—it is a daily practice that ensures the safety and reliability of our water supply. As the Water Quality Manager, I have dedicated over 17 years to safeguarding the water that our community depends on. My passion for science began with curiosity—questioning how things work, why they happen, and how they can be improved. This drive led me to pursue a degree in Biology and later a Master’s in Occupational Health and Science and Environmental Management, equipping me with the knowledge to oversee critical water quality processes.

Our laboratory serves as the backbone of water safety. Every day, we conduct microbiological and chemical testing to monitor water quality and ensure it meets the highest standards. We analyze bacteria levels, chlorine residuals, pH balance, turbidity, and chemical compositions to detect and prevent contamination. Our work doesn’t stop at testing—science also helps us understand chemical reactions, ensuring that the treatment processes are effective and sustainable. By using advanced laboratory techniques, we continuously track changes in water quality, providing data-driven solutions to protect public health.

Women in science play an essential role in ensuring that our environment, health, and infrastructure remain safe. This day serves as a powerful reminder that girls and women belong in science—not just as participants, but as leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers.

To every young girl with a passion for discovery, to every woman working tirelessly in STEM fields—you are shaping the future. Science is limitless, and so are you.

Let’s continue to break barriers, inspire the next generation, and recognize the incredible contributions of women in science!
