Why Test Water?
When was the last time you had the quality of your tap water tested?
Provo Water Company conforms to strict water quality standards set by the World Health Organization. These standards ensure that the water flowing through the mains distribution system is up to scratch at all times.
However, once the water leaves the mains supply and enters a private residence or commercial building, the pipes, storage tanks, local distribution systems and other factors can start to affect the quality of the water.
There are also properties, that depend on private water supplies and may need to carry out testing on their water supply.

Private Water Supply Testing
If your water is purchased from a private supplier, or your supply comes from a well or borehole, it probably has not been through the intensive water processing stages to disinfect drinking water that are used by Provo Water Company.
In a worst case scenario bacteria, viruses or heavy metals might contaminate your water, which can lead to dangerous contamination by organisms such as E. coli and Salmonella.
Taking the time to regular test your water regularly means you are aware of any issues that might exist and be able to target the problems appropriately.

Coliform Bacteria
Coliform bacteria are the most common water test carried out to determine the safety of the water distribution system. Our laboratory currently conducts water quality test on the following common bacteria:-
- Coliform
- Fecal Coliform
- Escherichia Coli
- Fecal Streptococci.
What Are Coliform Bacteria?
Coliform bacteria include a large group of many types of bacteria that occur throughout the environment. They are common in soil and surface water and may even occur on your skin. Large numbers of certain kinds of coliform bacteria can also be found in waste from humans and animals. Most types of coliform bacteria are harmless to humans, but some can cause mild illnesses and a few can lead to serious waterborne diseases.
Coliform bacteria are often referred to as “indicator organisms” because they indicate the potential presence of disease-causing bacteria in water. The presence of coliform bacteria in water does not guarantee that drinking the water will cause an illness. Rather, their presence indicates that a contamination pathway exists between a source of bacteria (surface water, septic system, animal waste, etc.) and the water supply. Disease-causing bacteria may use this pathway.
